What are cookies?
A "cookie" is a small text file that websites install on a user's computer when they access a particular site or use certain services offered by the site. Its purpose is to store and transport information. Cookies are sent from a web server (which is the computer on which the visited site is running) to the User's browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and stored on the user's device. For more information and to learn more about cookies in general, you can visit the page www.allaboutcookies.org.
What are cookies used for?
In general, cookies can be used for various reasons, for example to monitor the use of the site by visitors, to improve page navigation, to allow you to set personal preferences on the sites you are visiting, to protect user security, to present advertising messages based on the interests of visitors.
Types of cookies and purposes
In general, and according to common terminology, cookies can have different characteristics that allow them to be classified according to:
- Duration: in this case we speak of session/temporary cookies or persistent cookies;
- Origin: in this case we speak of first-party cookies (sent to the browser directly by the site being visited) or third-party cookies (sent to the browser by other sites and not by the site being visited);
- Purpose: in this case, also in line with what is provided for by the Italian Data Protection Authority, we speak of technical cookies or profiling cookies. Following this classification, a single cookie may also have all these characteristics together, so, for example, it may be a persistent cookie, coming from a third party and with profiling purposes.
Following this classification, a single cookie can possess all of these characteristics simultaneously. For instance, a cookie might be persistent, third-party, and used for profiling purposes.
Duration
- Session/Temporary Cookies: These are not stored permanently but only for the duration of the browsing session. This means they are automatically deleted from the user's device once they exit the website and close the browser.
- Persistent Cookies: These are stored on the user's device until they are deleted by the user or until they reach their predetermined expiration date. They are not automatically deleted from the user's device when they exit the website.
Origin
- First-party Cookies: These are cookies issued by the website being visited; the website corresponds to the address typed in by the user (the website displayed in the URL bar).
- Third-party Cookies: These are cookies issued by a website other than the one being visited by the user.
Purpose
- Technical Cookies: These cookies are essential for browsing the website and using specific features. They can be subdivided into:
- Navigation/Communication/Performance Cookies: These ensure normal browsing and use of the website (allowing, for example, a purchase or authentication to access restricted areas); if these cookies are blocked, the website may no longer function correctly.
- Strictly Necessary Cookies (functionality/preferences/location/session state): These allow the website to store information that modifies the behavior or appearance of the site (preferred language, text and character sizes, geographic area). If they are blocked, the browsing experience will be less functional but not compromised. These cookies allow the website to remember the choices made (such as language preference, content of interest, etc.) and to provide the personalized features selected by the user, in order to improve the browsing experience. In some cases, these cookies can also be used to offer online services (e.g., offering a live chat service) or to prevent services that the user has previously refused from being offered.
- Analytics Cookies: Analytics cookies are used to allow web services to collect information about user access, such as the number of visitors to the site, the duration of their stay, and which parts of the site they visit. These cookies may be first-party or third-party.
- Third-party Statistical/Analytics Cookies without Identification Power (with IP masking and no cross-referencing with other data held by the third party): In line with current regulations, these cookies can be assimilated to technical cookies if they meet the following conditions: adoption of measures that reduce the identifying power of cookies through the masking of portions of the IP; the third party undertakes to use these cookies exclusively for the provision of the service, and to store them separately and not to "enrich" or "cross-reference" them with other information at its disposal.
- Third-party Statistical/Analytics Cookies with Identification Power: These are cookies that are used to collect information and generate statistics on the use of the website, to understand how visitors interact with the site. These cookies are considered to have a high identification value when the following conditions are not met simultaneously: (i) no functions are adopted to reduce the identifying power of cookies (e.g., by masking significant portions of the IP); (ii) the third party cross-references the information contained in the cookies with other information that it already has.

Marketing cookies and cookie profiling
Marketing cookies are generally used to track visitors on websites. The purpose is to present advertisements that are relevant and engaging to the individual user and therefore of greater value to third-party publishers and advertisers. They are designed to understand the preferences of individual users so as to present them, during browsing, with targeted content of interest to them, based on previous browsing (for example, cookies can be used to store information such as preferred page configuration and playback preferences, explicit choices regarding automatic playback, random playback of content, and player size). This activity is facilitated by tracking usage data and using tracking tools to collect information that is then transferred to partners who manage remarketing and behavioral targeting activities. For example, this website uses third-party technologies to manage preferences, manage and improve the user experience, associate information about visits collected from the website/app with other information from the accounts of third-party users who have logged in and have consented to this association for the purpose of customizing ads. This information may include the User's location, search history, video history, and data from sites that collaborate with each other and are used to provide aggregated and anonymous information on cross-device user behavior. Among the providers identified for the service, in addition to those already mentioned, there is Meta Platform Inc - Privacy Policy, therefore the data collected may also be subject to extra-EU transfer.
Additional Third-Party Requests
Third-party requests are all those requests that a site makes to load content from third-party domains. The connection can be a subdomain of the site's domain or an unrelated domain name. While some third-party requests are necessary for the functionality of a site, consider the content uploaded from a content delivery network, other requests are used to display advertising, social media buttons, tracking scripts, or other content. In some cases, device fingerprinting systems are also used (Analytics, Advertising). The anonymous data collected relates to the characteristics of the device used by the user and allows for the presentation of advertisements that are even more relevant and engaging to the individual user. All the information acquired does not necessarily reveal personal information about the user (e.g., name, location, etc.), but is useful for the purpose of proposing advertisements in line with the user's preferences. This site uses content services provided by Google (such as fonts.gstatic.com, fonts.googleapis.com, region1.google-analytics.com, www.googletagmanager.com [URL non valido rimosso] and stats.g.doubleclick.net...), by Microsoft (such as w.clarity.ms, c.bing.com, ...) and by Facebook (connect.facebook.net; www.facebook.com).
